When hiring remodeling contractors, it is important to research the company in order to ensure that they are experienced and skilled. For example, remodeling contractors who work primarily with concrete or masonry structures should possess extensive experience working with and repairing these types of structures. Likewise, those who handle electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and/or structural issues should have extensive experience with these tasks.
In addition to ensuring that construction contractors have experience working with concrete or masonry, research thoroughly on the contractor’s education, licensing, and accreditation. Additionally, make sure that the prospective remodeling contractor has not been sued or found guilty of any wrongdoing by past clients. Ask the contractors’ national association if they are a member of the remodeling industry’s national association. If they are not a member of this association, it is also important to inquire as to whether they have ever been a member of the association and if so, how long they were a member. These questions will provide the contractor and potential client with important information that will ensure the best, safest, and most quality work is done.

Contact your state or local building regulations organizations to inquire about any and all changes in construction regulations, remodeling contractors’ requirements, and any other pertinent regulations. Some states require that contractors obtain licenses before they can begin working. Additionally, certain states and cities may require that handymen and others with similar qualifications to obtain a license, too.
Lastly, ask friends and family members whom they recommend for a remodeling contractor. Having a name or two of trustworthy individuals to call on will ensure that no matter who you choose, you are very confident in their ability to complete your project. Additionally, if one person recommends a particular contractor, and they are happy and satisfied with their work, chances are that they will tell everyone they know, too. Be sure to get at least three quotes from different contractors, so that you will have an easier time comparing their prices and services, and ultimately choosing the one who will do the best job for you.
