Greta Gerwig continues to accept accolades for her directorial debut. The Lady Bird actress-director is nominated for a Directors’ Guild of America award.
The Only Female Director
At last Sunday’s Golden Globe Awards, several poignant actresses such as Natalie Portman and Barbra Streisand plainly criticized the Hollywood endowment circuit for not nominating womanlike directors. The Directors’ Guild of America must have taken this issue to heart since Gerwig and her organisation were selected for their work for Lady Bird.
Best Director Face Off
Gerwig and her organisation have some critical foe for the award. Outside of DGA maestro Christopher Nolan, 3 other directors are nominated for a DGA endowment for the first time.
Comedian-writer Jordan Peele is up for two awards including Best Director for his directorial debut, Get Out. Film veteran, Guillermo del Toro, scored his very first DGA assignment for his work in the Shape of Water. Del Toro’s film has been heavily adored in several endowment races such as the BAFTAS, the Critics’ Choice Awards, and the Screen Actors Guild Awards.
The last executive that was nominated for the DGA’s desired Best Director endowment was Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri‘s, Martin McDonagh. McDonagh’s crime play scored 4 Golden Globe Awards including Best Motion Picture-Drama at last Sunday’s festivities.
War Of The Newbies
The DGA Awards also has a singular difficulty noticing up-and-coming directors, who done their directorial debuts during the endowment season. The Outstanding Directorial Achievement of a First-Time Feature Film Director featured a different organisation of nominees including Peele, Geremy Jasper (Patti Cake$), William Oldroyd (Lady Macbeth), Taylor Sheridan (Wind River), and mythological screenwriter Aaron Sorkin.
Gerwig’s Award Season Accomplishments
Despite not being nominated for the Outstanding Directorial Achievement of a First-Time Feature Film Director award, Gerwig has had a illusory endowment season. Lady Bird perceived Best Motion Picture-Comedy or Musical at the Golden Globes. Also, Gerwig was the first singer to cut ties with controversial executive Woody Allen.
The film is also nominated for several Critics’ Choice Awards including Best Picture. Lady Bird has also been nominated for the Writer’s Guild of America’s Best Original Screenplay award. Meanwhile, the American Film Institute named the film one of its top films of 2017. Gerwig was also named one of Entertainment Weekly’s Top Entertainers of 2017.
Gerwig will find out if she receives the Best Director endowment when Judd Apatow hosts the Directors’ Guild Awards on Feb. 3.
